Hon. Danny Doobay
Alumnus Danny Doobay, the Honorary Consul-General of Guyana in Toronto, is the iniitiator of Schoolnet Guyana and the annual
Guyana Awards. His contributions have greatly enriched Guyanese community life in Canada.
Hon. Consul Danny Doobay was appointed to his current post as the Honorary Consul General of Guyana to Canada in October 1998, with Jurisdictional responsibilities for the Greater Toronto Area, Western Ontario and Western Canada.
Hon. Consul Doobay previously worked as the General Manager of the Guyana Television Corporation (GTV). Prior to his appointment at GTV, Hon. Consul Doobay worked in Toronto with Tomahdia Associates, as the Vice-President for Marketing and Design.
Since his appointment as Honorary Consul, he has represented Guyana at numerous meetings, forums and Assemblies, including a Diaspora Conference in Mexico in 2004. During his stint in Guyana, Hon. Consul Doobay served as a member of the Advisory Council to the Minister of Information.
Hon. Consul Doobay has actively participated in the Guyanese community in Canada since 1978. He served as Director of the ACG (1978-1996); President of Superstars Sports Club (1984-86); Director of Guyana Canadian Association (1990-91); President of Association of Concerned Guyanese (1992-1995); Editor of Guyana Current (1992-1996); Co-Chair of the Guyana Independence Committee (1994-95) and President of Bushlot High School Alumni Association (1993-1996).
Currently, Hon. Consul Doobay serves as the Honorary Chair of the Guyana Festival Committee and the Guyana Awards Committee. In addition, he is a serving member of the board of directors of St. John Ambulance (Toronto) and chair for global partnership for literacy.
Hon. Consul Doobay was instrumental in setting up the Guyana Independence celebrations in Toronto, and pioneered its rebranding as the Guyana Festival. He also spearheaded the establishment of the Guyana Awards program, the Cross-Canada Celebrations and the Guyana Canada Chamber of Commerce.
Hon. Consul Doobay holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelors Degree (Honours) in Public Administration. He is married and has two children, Rejhan and Ashaya.
